    The Internet: A Double-Edged Sword

There was a time when privacy was a given and personal information, about a particular person, was only known if it was uttered. With the advent of the internet, the lines between private and public domains have not only been blurred, but opened...for all to see, voluntarily. Furthermore, the internet, in actuality, has become both a vessel of private information and information manipulation. Two authors who show the extent of this infiltration are Anders Albrechtslund in "Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance" and Peter Braden in "Is the Internet The Harbinger of Orwell's Nightmares?".

    Social Networking: untold Truth

Social networks have controlled over lives. Some people are helpless without social networks, because it’s a way for them to get online attention, making new friends and saving memories. Some people show their selves differently than they are in reality, some of them do not identify their identity. But they are not aware of rewriting of history, truth and reality. The two articles, “ A privacy paradox:Social networking in the United States” by Susan B. Barnes and “Is The Internet The harbinger Of Orwell’s Nightmares?” by Peter Braden, both give a lot of details about saved history, untold truth and reality on social networks.

    "Internet and Concepts at Stakes"

The internet has become the evident example of advancements in society. It has created a global, and truly interactive networking medium, where we can all be involved. However, there are certain liberties and rights in normal life even the internet has begun to devastate. Privacy has been questioned through the internet--as now virtually anyone; government, peers, predators, etc, can take information considered "personal". The internet has also been subjected to a fluid "censorship" advocacy as well--straining the freedom of speech democracy was founded with. Those ideas have been insinuated in the writing of Anderson Albrechtslund, "Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance". As well as Peter Braden in, "Is the Internet The Harbinger of Orwell's Nightmares".

Social Networking Can Hurt The User through Maladaptive Behaviors

Recently in the United States of America social networking has had many problems that needs to be addressed by users and lawmakers as well. Privacy, boundaries, and protection come to mind when discussing the topic of social networking. Social networking problems truly require further evaluations. More studies need to be held in order to fully be aware of problems that may come from Internet usage or lack there of in forms of withdrawal. One such problem is the lack of guidelines displayed before using current social networks in plain language that sort of acts like a checklist to provide better awareness and empowerment towards the users experience. Peter Braden the author of “Is The Internet The Harbinger Of Orwell’s Nightmares?” and Susan B. Barnes the writer of “A Privacy Paradox: Social Networking In The United States” both touched on these issues as a major concern.

Awaken the Oblivious Apropos Social Networking Sites

The young lighthearted mind of an adolescent, striving to make oneself known through the internet in which the information posted by them seems to be sheltered in the virtual world of social networking websites but misfortunately trickling its way out to the offline world of reality. As social networking websites increase in popularity, major problems arise that harmfully affect teenage users. Anders Albrechtslund exemplifies the vital predicaments in regards to social networking websites in the article, “Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance”, in which he defends, and counter argues similar points made in Susan B. Barnes text, “A Privacy Paradox: Social Networking in the United States”. The inexperienced behavior of an adolescent triggers moments in which updating personal information on social networking websites appear completely acceptable. The vulnerability of teenagers to insert personal content in social networking websites lead to the increase in major problems such as geographical tagging and its involvement with sexual predation, perpetual information stored on servers, and impending harm to academic and career opportunities, therefore in order to mend and later on avoid such problems, a combined effort of government legislation and parental monitoring of online behavior needs to be enacted.

    Social Network - An Issue

Facebook, Twitter and Instagram: Top three social networking sites used around the world today. Social Networking sites were first meant to be used as a source to interact and communicate with friends internationally and globally. Now Social Networking usage has greatly increased and has created issues within our society. Authors like Ander Albrechtslund in "Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance" and Susan B. Barnes in "A Privacy Paradox: Social Networking in the United States" both support this in their articles in which they have similar understanding on how Social Networking usages have created problems such as privacy threats, potential damages to academic and career opportunities and even persistent storage and “eternal: archiving of information on servers.

As teenagers fire up their computers, the first thing they do is go on their social networks. The most popular one is Facebook. They post on Facebook about day, where they are, how they feel, and pictures of themselves. What they do not realize is how much damage they can cause by posting so much personal information on these social networks. Teenagers do not notice how social networks can cause numerous threats to privacy, create sexual predators, and potentially damage academic and career opportunities. In the articles “A Privacy Paradox: Social Networking in the United States,” by Susan B. Barnes, “Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance,” by Anders Albrechtslund, and “Is the Internet the Harbinger of Orwell's Nightmares?” by Peter Braden, the authors show these negative issues.

  8. In today's society, teenagers have become addicted to social networking websites. Some of these websites include, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. This addiction may not seem harmful, but it can lead to a bigger issue than it appears. Some of these issues are privacy, online predators, and abuse of internet access. The articles "Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance" by Anders Albrechtslund and "A Privacy Paradox: Social Networking in the United States" by Susan B. Barnes both demonstrate these issues and how they can be avoided.

“What is done in the dark will eventually come to the light.” These days everyone who is anyone has some sort of account on at least one social website. Websites like facebook, instagram, twitter, tumblr, etc. allow people to connect with others via the internet. Outside of school and/or work, people have their own private lives. Social websites give people the opportunity to connect with others and share what is going on with them in their personal lives. Some people end up showing too much of what is going on with them that can harm them in the near future. For example: getting into colleges or job employment. Social websites are good for allowing people to connect with each other, people need to be more self-conscious about what it is they allow to be shown on the internet. The authors Susan B. Barnes and Anders Albrechtslund have written articles which go into more depth about the invasion of privacy with these social websites.

We are living in an information society. More and more data can be stored in smaller and smaller devices. This development matches perfect to the huge amount of information that travels through the web and is stored for all kind of reasons. But people seem to voluntary give up their intimate information oblivious that all these data are collected for various reasons. They do not know or want to know about the consequences of potential threats to their future, to career opportunities. Alone the possibility that predators can find information about their victims including their location should make us think. The articles "Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance" by Anders Albrechtslund,  "A Privacy Paradox: Social Networking in the United States" by Susan B. Barnes and “Is the Internet the Harbinger of Orwell's Nightmares?” by Peter Braden argue about these issues.

  11. In the todays society, our privacy is being tempered with ;in which the United States government plays a big role in it.The word internet can be defined as a worldwide system of computer networks used to exchange information. The internet first came around the 1957 and has been in process since then. Even though the internet system serves as very helpful and valuable and provides us with information, there are some disadvantages that come along with it. The moment ones computer or electronic device gets connected to the Internet, that's an automatic "goodbye" to one 's privacy. Even though there ways one could set their internet usage to “private” the government will always have access to all information. Any action that takes place on the Internet leaves traces behind and is monitored by the government and other spying services of the government. In the articles “Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance by Anders Albrechtslund” and Is The Internet The Harbinger Of Orwell's Nightmares by Peter Braden, both authors share almost the same views about the whole concept about the internet.

Internet now acts as water for many of us. Survival without it seems unimaginable. As we use water to quench our thirst internet helps us to bring the world in front of us by connecting us worldwide and giving all the information we desire to know and it quenches our curiosity. This increases the levels of comfort and efficiency in our work but also sometimes this could be making our personal lives more transparent to everyone without our knowledge. With the everyday basis threats of privacy in our online world which seems to exist infinitely due to the persistent storage of data gives rise to potential damages for our future opportunities which could be avoided by our responsible use of the internet and used to empower our identity creation and subjectivity.

    Minimize Activity, Maximize Awareness

In the articles “Is the Internet the Harbinger of Orwell’s Nightmares?” by Peter Braden and “A Privacy paradox: Social networking in the United States” by Susan B. Barnes they discuss the issue of is it a gain or loss when putting your privacy online for others to see and its effects on its users. With much examination, it’s safe to say that an abundance of negatives consequences emerge from social networking in the United States. Both Braden and Barnes identify with three major problems: Data-mining and information gathering, Rewriting History, and increased government surveillance. While there are various consequences that come out from your actions, one possible solution is awareness. To be aware of ones activity on the internet will result in being responsible and cautious of what is shared on the internet for the government to see. Though the internet will always be here and people are going to use it, the only reasonable solution would be to take any precautions to minimize privacy threat and invasion.

Social networking and internet usage by teenagers and young adults really have made an epidemic. When young adults use social networks it can attract sexual predators from MySpace or Facebook and geotagging, can damage academic and career opportunities, and it can rewrite reality. Teenagers and young adults are usually naïve or ignorant toward reality and the dangers of social networking. Susan B. Barnes in her article, “A privacy paradox: Social networking in the United States”, and Anders Albrechtslund in his article, “Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance”, both argue about social networking and how much of a priority it is for young adults to be involved with it. The negativities of social networking can be quite dangerous but, there are ways in order to find solutions to them.

As the world changes, humans evolve. From writing letter to texting. From face to face conversations to a Telephone call. Now the next step in communication is social networking. Changes are inevitable. It may have lots of positive but could also have many negatives. Social networking brings data mining, numerous threats to privacy and increased government surveillance. It is up everyone to embrace the positives. In “A privacy paradox: Social networking in the United States” by Susan Barnes, the author explains the problems behind “Big Brother”. Barnes talks about how the government keeps information on everyone for military recruitment post 9/11(Barnes 2). The problem would be that the government isn’t even using this information for safety reason but for their own gain. In “Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance” by Ander Albrechtslund, the author shows us the danger behind threats to privacy

In present day society, social networking has become revolutionized, in such a way that people need to have it in their everyday lives. Living without social network is unbearable to some people, especially teenagers. Susan B. Barnes author of “A privacy paradox: Social networking in the United States”, generalized teenagers by claiming “Teenagers now use organized social Web sites to meet others and explore identity formation” (1). While, Ander Alberchtslund author of “Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance”, illustrates that “online social networking is anchored in surveillance practices” (1). These two authors go in depth and voice their opinions on what social networking has done to people and how much privacy people are willing to give up just being a part of the social networking.

Impact of social network and its purpose.
Social network have become a major part of American society and globally it is massive and menace. Most of the people in America are can’t stay away from social networks and some people are not what they are appear to be on internet. Social networks mostly affect the teenagers because they are very vulnerable and it may lead to loss of privacy, information gathering, and sexual predators on servers. The articles "Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance" by Anders Albrechtslund and "A Privacy Paradox: Social Networking in the United States" by Susan B. Barnes they both have a similar argument against the negative effects of the social networks and the possible solution. Also privacy has been diminishing thanks to social networks and internet now anyone can use the personal information’s because people let freely giving their personal information to the whole world see forever. It can definitely affect the future academic and professional careers of people especially teenagers.

With the internet growing with the rapid rate of a child, we see it entering its young foolish teenage years and we must therefore worry about the dangers of that time. Two texts that explore these dangers are “Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance” by Anders Albrechtslund, and “A Privacy Paradox: Social Networking in the United States” by Susan B. Barnes. The internet brings many great things but too much of a good thing is bad, so where do we draw the line with what we give to the people, more importantly the people who rule the realm of the Web? We see numerous threats to. Whose privacy might be threatened? Adults have valuable information on the internet but children have something even more valuable than a bank statement, they have their own safety put at risk from sexual predation. With these gaps in online defenses the government is bound to take an interest but what if it isn’t to protect the populous as much as it is to gather information on people. One of the things people must focus on is educating themselves about individual responsibility and disclosure of information. There can’t be control of people and what they do in the comfort of their own home so it is up to them to be safe and aware of their online footprint.
